I'm trying to work out how a Red Kangaroo (hereafter RK) society/group(s) will work as I move through the kangaroo familiy. RK's live in scrubland/grassland/desert in groups of about 10 and are usually led by an older male. Groups can get up to about 100 when food is scarce. So, apart from the applications for Roos, I don't see a need to have more than one mob unless it occurs ICly. Plot Idea #1: The Godfather An older, dominant male is coming close to death. So far, the everyday toils of governing the mob (where to wander, what to do, etc.) have been shared by his three male children, all adults. The older male must pick an heir, or divide the mob into three much smaller (and perhaps less sustainable) ones. Drama ensues. Plot Idea #2: The Dingo Ate My Babeh! A dingo pack has taken to following the mob and snacking on joeys that wander too far from the rest of the group. The normal reaction to danger amongst roos is to scatter and hop-away like mad, but the deaths of so many children are making some of the females (mostly those who lost a joey) demand a fight. The males are less inclined, knowing that the dingoes are far better equipped. Drama ensues. If you can come up with anything, feel free to post.
